There is an old fashioned idea floating about that everyone in the picture needs to have matching colours. This is not true. Choose colours that look nice together, but don't fall into the trap that you all need to be wearing the exact same outfit or colour. Co-ordinating is far better than matching as your photos with look more interesting with some variation.

I always recommend having at least three core colours in your palette. After you've selected your own outfit, take a look at the accent colours in it and use those to tie in the outfits of everyone else. For example if you are wearing a cream dress with blush accents/accessories and brown leather shoes (your primary colour is cream), your partner could wear navy trousers with a simple or blue shirt and a tan blazer (their primary colour being tan). One child could wear a blush dress with cream accents and another child could wear khaki trousers with a cream shirt and a navy jacket.

As you can see, starting with one core colour can have many complimentary and contrasting colours that work well together. 

Stay away from busy patterns and tight checks, stripes or plaids and no logos. Matching denim and neutrals are a great combo. The goal is for you to look great, but we want the focus to be on you, not your clothes.
