Summer Holiday Activities in Essex 2021
Six weeks is a long time to keep the kids happy, but especially this year, we all very much need some down time and some fun. I've put together a selection of great events happening around Essex.
Themed Nature Trails
As a Corporate Partner of the Essex Wildlife Trust, I love visiting their nature reserves. They have an extensive network of sites around the county, but did you know they also have themed nature trails? There is Bramley Hedge at Abberton, Wind in the Willows at Hanningfield, The Gruffalo at Thorndon, and Peter Rabbit at Langdon. Find out more at Essex Wildlife Trust Themed Nature Trails
Mulitsports for Schools are working with Active Essex and Essex ActivAte and local communities to provide FREE fun activities for children and young people, between 26 July and 27 August. Get Active, Get Creative, Get Cooking. Available at the following venues:

Hares About Town Trail Southend
Hares About Town is a spectacular public art event in partnership with Wild in Art that will weave its way across Southend-on-Sea from July for 10 weeks in 2021. Hare sculptures, each one individually designed by an artist and sponsored by a business, form a free, fun, family-friendly trail of discovery for local people to explore and enjoy! There is also a fun app featuring a collectors map, including gifts and rewards to collect. Hare all about it at Hares About Town

A great game to play to while away a summer day is cloud watching. See how many different shapes you can spot in the clouds. Why not try a trip to South Weald Park in Brentwood and try out their wonderful Cloud Gazers to look up at the clouds in style? You can also visit the Stick Man trail. Find out more at South Weald Country Park
The Big Butterfly Count
The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide citizen science survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Over 111,500 citizen scientists took part in 2020, submitting 145,249 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK.
The Big Butterfly Count 2021 runs from Friday 16 July to Sunday 8 August, and can be done from the comfort of your own garden or local park. Find out more at Big Butterfly Count

The Big Summer Read with Essex Libraries
When my kids were younger, they loved going to the library and getting their books for the summer read, and spending long summer days reading in the garden. This year they are teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund for a very special nature-themed challenge that will inspire you to stand up for the planet! Join the Wild World Heroes at your local library.
Whatever you do this summer holidays, make sure you stay safe and have fun.
Please check the attraction details before you leave home. Some may require advance booking under covid restrictions. I am not responsible for any decisions you make from the information in this blog, and they are only suggestions.
